Cole's Quilting Journey

Hello, I am Cole. I learned how to quilt as a child from my grandmother. My grandmother made beautiful hand quilted quilts for every grandchild when they were young and again for them when they got married. She would also make her grandchildren clothes. The quilt she made me when I was five years old, I still have to this day (I am now in my 40's) and it is one of my most cherished possessions. Going to fabric stores with my grandmother and sitting next to her at her old Kenmore rotary sewing machine while she explained all the ins and outs of what she was doing are some of my fondest memories of my childhood.

I enjoyed sewing when I was young. I often made myself clothes, made a few quilts and made some clothes for friends. I even considered a career in fashion design.

Although I loved sewing I also loved painting, singing, photography... anything creative you name it. So, not sure what to do with my life, after high school I became a hair stylist. I worked as I cosmetology instructor and hair stylist for 20 years. I also did some freelance graphic design and photography.

Quilting Love Rekindled

One day I wanted to buy a Super Mario Brothers 3 comforter for my guest room, and I couldn’t find one anywhere.  They were all the new style and I didn't like them. It had been years since I had sat at my sewing machine, but, I decided to make my own none the less. Making that quilt rekindled my love of quilting.

Since that quilt, I have created many commissions for people, and won awards in quilt shows. Quilting has been a form of therapy for me. It brings me a lot of joy. I have been enjoying learning new quilting skills and every time I sit down at my sewing machine I feel like my grandmother is there, even though she has since passed away. I hope that I can continue to do it and that other people will enjoy the quilts as much as I have enjoyed quilting them.
